Creative Movement from Children's Storybooks: Going beyond Pantomime; Acting out Stories Provides a Cross-Disciplinary Entree to the Creative-Dance Experience

Gabbei, Ritchie; Clemmens, Heidi

Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v76 n9 p32 Nov-Dec 2005

Creative movement is an ideal vehicle for integrating curriculum, because the potential for human inspiration is limitless. When working in a creative-movement setting, students communicate thoughts, ideas, or feelings without fear of being judged incorrect or losing a competition. Yet, pantomime is just the beginning. The next step would be to ask students to develop creative-movement sequences derived from the content story. Included in this article is a description of how teachers, regardless of prior dance experience or training, can provide an interdisciplinary lesson in creative movement and language. This article embodies a physical education teacher's conceptual framework based on accepted pedagogical practices (Rink, 2002), so that physical education specialists or classroom teachers, who may lack a background in creative dance, can easily implement this activity into their curriculum. The explanation of this creative-movement lesson sequence is presented in two sections: (1) how to perform the pantomime lesson, and (2) how to perform the creative-movement sequence. Each section has subsections that describe pre-instructional and instructional actions that lead to successful implementation of this lesson sequence. Utilizing this lesson sequence is a good way to provide students with a rich learning experience that integrates language, creativity, problem solving, and movement skill. Literary sources to develop movement sequences and dances can include published or student-created stories, poems, lyrics, or music.

Movement classes for children with Autism

2008-12-23 17:54:10 by dillybean13

Hello everyone! I have a Mater's in Dance Education from NYU & also worked in a private therapeutic school in Manhattan. I now live in DC & am interested in starting up a creative movement/yoga class for children with Autism. Would that be of interest to parents & if so, I'm looking for some feedback on locations that I might be able to use, how much you would be willing to pay for such a program (i.e. 12 week sessions) & what kind of expectations would you have of such a course. I'm only interested in working with about 4 children at once per session. This way I can keep control of the room while promoting the social aspect of a group situation
