  • "The whole Al’s Pals journey so far has been extremely gratifying knowing that the program Wingspan developed can make a difference in how teachers and children interact with such positive results.”

Children's Educational Programs

Wingspan’s engaging educational programs develop social-emotional skills, problem-solving abilities, and healthy decision-making in children ages 3 – 8 years old.

Our two premiere programs, Al’s Pals: Kids Making Healthy Choices and Al’s Caring Pals: A Social Skills Toolkit for Home Child Care Providers, reach children across a variety of settings -- school, preschool, child care centers, afterschool programs, and family child care homes.

The easy-to-use materials help children learn to:

  • manage their feelings
  • get along with others
  • use self-control
  • accept differences
  • resolve conflict peacefully
  • cope
  • make healthy choices

Children enjoy the activities and readily incorporate newly acquired skills into their daily behavior and interactions.

Educators and child care providers benefit from the experiential training provided to them. They learn practical and effective ways to guide young children’s positive development and shape classroom or home care environments that foster caring, cooperation, and respect.

House panel OKs big cuts in public broadcast funding
Washington Post
Washington -- A House subcommittee voted Thursday to sharply reduce the federal government's financial support for public broadcasting, including eliminating taxpayer funds that help underwrite such popular children's educational programs as "Sesame Street" and "Arthur."
In addition, the subcommittee acted to eliminate within two years all federal money for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting -- which passes federal funds to public broadcasters -- starting with a 25 percent reduction for next year, from $400 million to $300 million

America’s educational train wreck.

You’ve always been told that one of the more egalitarian features of America’s system of public education is that all children are given an equal opportunity for the same high quality education. This is in supposed contrast to some European educational systems where some children are segregated at age 14 into secondary school programs that have a vocational/technical emphasis, while others are placed on an academic track designed to prepare them for college.
In practice, America has managed to create the worst aspects of both practices. Our secondary educational system does a demonstratively poor job of preparing our children for college, while those who clearly don’t have the inclination or resources to benefit from the college experience are shunted onto a track that leads over a...

A New York Times editorial by Nicholas D. Kristof (June 16 or 17, depending on the edition you get) discusses cool alternatives to neckties and Hallmark cards, including a 30-inch long rat that is being used to detect landmines and tuberculosis in Africa.
Kristof also cites education-related ways to celebrate Father's Day, including educational programs for young men around the world, such as the National Fatherhood Initiative, which "works to support dads and keep them engaged in their children’s lives:"
