Community Health Education Programs

This program is the only one of its kind in the University of Wisconsin System. Our courses emphasize the Seven Areas of Responsibilities for a Community Health Educator. The Community Health Education program prepares students for careers in public or private health agencies, hospitals, health clinics, non-governmental health agencies and in business and industry. Courses emphasize administrative issues; health promotion skill-building; program planning, implementation and evaluation; and marketing strategies. Students learn how to prepare written materials as well as electronic media presentations for mass audiences. Upon graduation, students can take the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) examination.

Students take courses in epidemiology, biometrics, environmental health, grant seeking, mental & emotional health, sexual health promotion, nutrition education, theories of health behavior and others.

The CHE program culminates with a Preceptorship (internship) experience that combines classroom work with real-world experiences as students work in the health education field for a total of 560 hours.

The mission of the BS-CHE program at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (UW-La Crosse) is to prepare professionals using entry-level (BS-CHE) health education competencies and public health core areas who will address quality of life enhancement through health education and health promotion, mindful of the holistic, dynamic and interdependent nature of people and their interactions with and within the environment.

BS-CHE Goals:

  1. To prepare community health educators through the necessary coursework in entry-level public health core areas and health education competencies.
  2. To prepare community health educators who will work with a variety of population demographics, settings, and cultural perspectives within the primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention domains of health education and health promotion.
  3. To engage community health education majors in Preceptorship experiences that enable candidates to become more competent within the seven entry-level Areas of Responsibility.

-Get the Lead Out-
maybe they can help. I found mine through the local Community Action program, but I'd think you can google it and find it. There are also state rum programs-check with your Board of Health. They have money for de-leading, education... maybe even for your situation.
There will be ways to resolve this I'm sure, you are the victims of this toxic mess.
PS. Lead in the soil takes many many years to be "safe", even after the clean-up of the chips some will have leached into the soil from the dust.

An ROP or community college is your best bet.

I don't know New York, but your county's public educaton system might have classes.
In California, we have "Regional Occupational Programs (ROP)" that are operated by each county's office of education. The classes are typically held on the campuses adjacent to high schools.
The cost of the course is the cost of books, and perahps some negligible tuition, well under $100.
Your community college is your next best bet. But there are many other healthcare vocations for which you can get training at a community college. Some of these are two years long, such as radiology or ultrasound technician, but you can make a decent wage from the programs
