Education Citizenship programs

DCI Senior Fellows with DCI Distinguished Fellow, Dorothy Cotton, are developing a pilot program of the Citizenship Education Program (CEP) for the 21st Century. We expect this first 3-day pilot workshop to get underway in Ithaca in October, 2011.

The CEP is rooted in the idea that social change requires individuals – on their own and collectively – to transform their understanding of both what is, and what is possible, and to shift their sense of their own roles and efficacy in bringing about change. The Citizenship Education Program supports, equips, and inspires participants to to plan and implement positive, powerful, non-violent action strategies to create the changes they want in their lives.

The CEP braids together three essential strands:

  • Civic Literacy promoting a working knowledge of one’s Civil and Human Rights through an accessible style of popular education
  • Civic Engagement and grassroots leadership development through interactive exercises, peer-group learning and support, generating practical action strategies
  • Fostering internal and relational transformations by building a powerful sense of connection between participants, instilling hope, developing confidence and motivation, cultivating courage, and the commitment to work in solidarity for social change and a Beloved Community.
