The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Department of Labor (DoL) and the Department of Education (DoE) all administer a number of employment, education, and training programs for veterans. The following is a summary of these programs:

The major programs offered are:

  • The Montgomery G.I. Bill - Active Duty
  • The Montgomery G.I. Bill - Selected Reserve
  • Veteran's Educational Assistance Program (VEAP)
  • Veteran's Upward Bound
  • Veteran's Employment and Training

Remember: There may be many scholarships, special loans, grants, and more available outside of Federal Govt. It will take some research on your part, but take advantage of the time you have put into the service - it can and should be rewarded! You can get started by checking out the State Veteran Programs list.

Find out more about the G.I. Bills here:

Remember that G.I. Bill benefits only extend for a fixed period of time after you leave - generally 10 years for Active Duty and 10 - 14 years for Selective Reserve.

Members eligible for the Vietnam Era G.I. Bill Conversion are those individuals who had remaining entitlement under the Vietnam Era GI Bill on Dec. 31, 1989, and served on active duty without a break sometime between Oct. 19, 1984, and July 1, 1985, and continued to serve on active duty to July 1, 1988, or to July 1, 1987, followed by four years in the Selected Reserve after release from active duty.

VEAP education eligibility may be established even though the required active duty is not completed if the veteran: (a) receives VA disability compensation or military disability retirement; (b) served a previous period of at least 24 continuous months of active duty before Oct. 17, 1981; or (c) was discharged or released for early out, hardship or service-connected disability.

I have completed a bachelors in computer science and a masters in information assurance online. I am considering going back to an online program for a masters in computer science.
Keep in mind though that most programs for the masters level may require an internship (mine required a 1 week internship at the university) and some form of thesis that you may have to defend.
A degree in education may be different; I'll look up some places and post a link here later. I had spent a long time researching the places I eventually went for my degree's and would not mind helping you look

My name is Jimm Derby I am a 40-year old student at Liberty University Online and a senior in the Elementary Education B.A. program. I have completed all of my classwork and my last requirement is a student teaching practicum. I live in Columbus, and because LUO is based in Virginia, their student teaching programs are local and I must set up my own assignment in OH.
That's why I am posting in this forum. If you are a teacher or principal or you know someone who is, perhaps you can help me achieve my dream of teaching 4th and 5th graders! Please reply to this post or send an email to jimm
